Experts have warned against rogue energy assessors who offer cut price energy performance certificates (EPCs)
Demand for EPCs has been high since it was made compulsory to obtain the energy certificate in October 2008, which has led to a rush of energy assessors offering reduced rate EPCs.
For property owners it is essential to get hold of a valid certificate in order to market their properties.
Now, one EPC expert is calling for property owners and agents to be wary of 'cut-price' EPCs.
Marc Blomfield, managing director of The National EPC Company, said:
"Property agents are being approached by firms offering to carry out EPCs without an on-site inspection, which in fact invalidates the certificate.
"It is really important to use a company that has a proven track record and will do a legal and professional job.
"It is essential that property owners and agents are vigilant against illegal certificates which will cause property transactions to fall through.
"A valid EPC is required by law when buying or selling a home so agents and homeowners need to make sure they use fully qualified assessors."
